No previous legal experience required
People often contact a law firm when they are unsure what to do next. Listening carefully, recording their concerns accurately and following through can make a meaningful difference to their experience.
At VL Lawyers, we believe legal knowledge should help people understand their situation and find a practical way forward. We are looking for a colleague who shares that interest and wants to learn how a law firm works, starting with reception.
Your starting point
You will begin with reception and everyday office administration. This is how you will learn about our clients, the documents we handle, and how information and instructions move through the Firm.
Your duties will include:
-
Answering calls, welcoming clients and handling initial WhatsApp enquiries.
-
Taking clear messages, recording relevant details and directing enquiries appropriately.
-
Receiving, checking, scanning and filing documents.
-
Helping to open, maintain and close case files.
-
Keeping track of follow-up tasks and assisting colleagues with daily office work.
These responsibilities require care. An accurate telephone message or a missing document noticed in time can help the whole team handle a matter properly.
Learning and development
You will learn directly from our solicitor and colleagues through practical work, explanations and feedback.
As you become reliable in the basics, you can gradually take on document preparation, client communication and parts of case follow-up under the solicitor’s supervision. Your responsibilities will develop with your understanding, accuracy and judgement.
We welcome questions about why something is done a particular way. We also expect you to take notes, practise and use what you have learned.
The working habits we value
We would like to hear from you if you:
-
Check your work without waiting to be reminded. You make a habit of checking names, dates, figures, attachments and instructions before passing work on.
-
Want to understand. You listen carefully, ask useful questions and seek clarification when something does not make sense.
-
Learn from mistakes. You raise errors promptly, help correct them and adjust your working methods to prevent them from recurring.
-
Care about how people are treated. You remain polite and attentive when someone is worried or impatient, and seek help when a query needs a colleague’s input.
-
Notice what needs following up. You flag missing information, clarify who is handling a task and offer appropriate help when colleagues need support.
Mistakes can happen while learning. What matters is how you respond to feedback and whether your work improves with practice.

What you need
-
Fluent Cantonese and the ability to read and type Traditional Chinese.
-
Sufficient English to understand everyday correspondence and documents, with a willingness to build your vocabulary.
-
Basic computer, email and Microsoft Word skills.
-
Respect for confidentiality and a responsible approach to handling information.
-
Willingness to begin with reception and develop within a long-term legal support role.
No specific academic qualification or legal background is required. Experience in customer service, hospitality, retail, administration or volunteering may provide useful foundations.
The pace of the work
There will be routine filing and administrative tasks, alongside calls, visitors and time-sensitive work. You will need to learn how to manage interruptions, keep track of unfinished tasks and check priorities when several things need attention.
We will help you build familiarity with the work. We expect steady progress towards greater accuracy, confidence and efficiency.
