10th Anniversary - Message from the Immediate Past President
In June 2014, HKU SPACE ALUMNI marched into its 10th Anniversary year. As a founding member of HKU SPACE ALUMNI I am delighted to share my thoughts on this happy occasion.
The ALUMNI has developed steadily over the past 10 years. I still recall its first deliberations on 27th June 2004 with only a handful of supporters present. It is now 180,000 strong. Much of the credit for this achievement must go to the late Dr Peter CY Lee, our founding President. It was his visionary foresight and boundless enthusiasm that led to the establishment of the ALUMNI. Steered by his energetic leadership, the ALUMNI carved for itself a rewarding path of rapid growth. Over the years, the ALUMNI has built up an active relationship between its large membership and HKU SPACE, our alma mater, as well as among the members themselves. Together we have striven to promote lifelong learning and community service.
Careers that contribute to the well-being of the community are not built overnight. In the past decade we have worked hard to assist in the individual growth of our members. I am happy to see that today so many of our alumni are thriving in their chosen professions. What is even more rewarding is their impetus to give back to the community in meaningful ways. Their contributions to society validate our mission: to promote lifelong learning for the realization of a learning society and to expand opportunities for individuals to advance their careers and personal development. We have come a long way and seen many positive changes. We owe a debt of thanks to our Council and staff members, past and present; without their hard work and selfless devotion we could not have come this far.
As much as it is a milestone, the Tenth Anniversary also represents a moment for reflection. Today, we are faced with multi-faceted demands from an ever-changing society. We must ready ourselves to spread our wings towards our community-oriented goals. We should try to scale new heights by widening our avenues for alumni engagement and at the same time rallying their support to serve the community at large. Our motto “We Learn To Serve”, should continue to be our guide in our on-going quest for innovative development.
To celebrate our 10th Anniversary, a broad range of activities will be unfolding throughout the coming year. I urge you all to stay tuned to this website to learn about our forthcoming events and participate in them.
Let’s work closely together to help build an even brighter future for HKU SPACE ALUMNI!
